To paraphrase a famous quote (I think it was by Bill G., or G. something), "The hackers shall always be with you." I like to blame Microsoft for as much as possible, but the crap quality of Microsoft's stuff is beside the point in this case. JDN said it: what is built by man can be overcome by man. Just as the internet is a new permanent part of the human condition, so is hacking. It doesn't matter how good or bad the software is. The hackers will escalate the sophistication of their attacks as long as the quality of the software climbs. It just has to be dealt with from now on. I'm of the school of thought that hackers who stir things up in a particularly visible way should be hired as consultants or otherwise rewarded for calling the drugged, sleepy public's attention to the problem. People lost MP3's? Tough sh*t. People lost .gif's or other artwork files that represented hours of work for clients? Well gorsh, maybe this will give them a new outlook on the necessity of backup. The Filipino kiddie (if that's indeed the culprit) was just serving as the index finger of God in this case. We're lucky he wasn't selected to serve as the middle finger. The software vendors and others should be thanking him. Give him a free Nintendo. --QS
