Selling short "against" an option is illegal.

Selling short and owning options at the same time is legal.

You can not use an option for margin.

If your broker "knows" you have them however he may be
a lot more "comfortable" giving you a "relaxed" margin :-}

Also - I may be long a stock that my wife is short - it's a free country.

Liz I used to a broker up here in Canada and Pre selling of the options happens all the time.I don't believe it is illegal.
Yes you could sell at one broker and use stock else to cover.This wouldn't be considered going short because you could do a DAP.
