I don't think you're being naive, Tom. In fact, the availability of real time quotes may be the most overrated piece of information available to individual investors nowadays.

No I am not being sarcastic. I just never thought about this until recently. We spend all this time and governmental energy going after companies to fully disclose and go as far as having insiders report their trades. Why do we not see the information of how many shares have just traded at what price as just as useful to investors? I suspect delayed quotes really exist for the benefit of the professional investors - there is certainly a benefit to them in having it this way. Perhaps more to the point - what governmental interest is there in perpetuating this condition in this age of instantly available data?
