An interesting thing about those PE's is the S&P keeps throwing out the laggards and adding the biggest and brightest with the best growth. Does anyone know what the turnover ration in the S&P was 20 years ago, ten years ago as compared to now?

I agree that companies with higher-than-average growth, such as JDSU, will and should command higher-than-average valuations. On average. It's just that the nadir of a bear market is not the average.
