Tom, allowing people who are ignorant regarding investments, to start investing a small portion of their social security would create a feedback loop where learning would take place. The same sort of thing happens to a lot of people who get their first job where a 401K is offered. Opportunity and access, begets learning. If Chile and Australia can do it. America can to.

If a rock like me can learn how to invest reasonably well, anyone can. :)

Tom,

I would bet that there would be quite a few people in that group who would quickly see their 2% go down to 0, and that loss would be enormous for them.

I don't know the detail of the Bush plan, but someone mentioned it was optional. If you do opt in, there are many investment choices where there it is unlikely to impossible to turn your investment to 0.

You can never fully protect people from themselves. If you do look for 100% security in everything, than the whole civilization stops. You will have to ban cars, because there is a possibility of a car accident.

If you never give children a chance to learn, if you never let them fall, or come home with a bloody nose, they will forever be children. I know there is an ideology in this country that wants the citizens to be children and the government to be the big mommy protecting them all, but it is a bankrupt ideology.

I say, give people a chance to save and invest for themselves, and you will be surprised how well they do.

Joe
