Members of the thread who are thinking of buying a Hewlett Packard computer might be interested in the following. After buying a new HP (a company I formerly admired) my experience has been little short of a nightmare - its still not working after more than five weeks - from the quality control that let loose such a badly compromised machine (new motherboard and hard drive needed, sound barely audible at maximum) to the polite but frankly inept technical support person who tried for over an hour on the phone to convince me the problem was software related. (The said call was not toll free of course - HP doesn't have one - but how else are you going to discourage people from calling in?) But what really shocked me was the cavalier attitude to its customers that leaves me and the repair shop waiting indefinitely for the needed parts - after three weeks the hard drive is "not coming any time soon" in CompUsa's words.

I would of course return this boat anchor for a refund or even upgrade to a working machine (the thought of it makes me dizzy with anticipation) but the online vendor (egghead.com) has a 30 day only policy so I'm stuck with it. Anyone need a doorstop?

I agree. I used today's run-up in Dell as an opportunity to accommodate some of those rapid buyers via a modest "first third". (g)

I was impressed with the lack of commitment shown today. The rallies aren't what they used to be.
