Curtis- My GTE Worldwind cable modem reports 545Kbps download and only 152Kbps upload speeds at your posted url. Not very fast for a cable modem. And I too, like John reports, seem to be delayed by the GTE metro network on my way to the Internet backbone.

I know this because four weeks ago, while traveling on business, I was using a 56k dial-up with my laptop. And I'm afraid to say, I hardly noticed the difference in speeds. I was using AOLnet to log on at that time. Kind of sad commentary about cable modems.

It costs me about $40/month for Internet access. It also includes an ISP of whom I have no idea who it is. But only if I purchase the cable TV package from GTE Americast. Without the cable TV package, I believe the cable modem access would cost about $50/month. -MikeM(From Florida)

Upon Further Examination....

Hi Curtis,

Do you know if dslreports.com
is strictly for DSL setups? I'm getting some drastically different numbers at this test site than I am at another, I've run multiple tests at each. Here are my results:

dslreports.com
__798x553Kbps
_9744x761
_8120x451
Infinity x434
_9744x716
_9744x_79
_9744x434
_4429x553
48720x716
_4429x369

computingcentral.com

1127Kbps
__68
_354
_816
_337
_370
1073
1236
1854
_566
1236

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What I can sense is that the later figures from Computing Central seem more in keeping with my sense of the real bit rate. Comments welcomed.
Oh, BTW, Bend Cable, here in Bend,OR has recently upgraded its head-ends to accomodate growth and I find that I am no better off. I regularly visit www.kksf.com and stream their audio signal and almost every session get interrupts on a 20.7K steaming audio feed, due to network congestion, according to the Real Network data line.
I believe that the DSL test you've offered may not be accurate or useful to cable modem users. Again, comments welcomed, as I am no expert here.
Best, Ray
Curtis, on your site I got:
** Est. speed down/up: 478/64kbps **
These speeds appear to be in excess of the (several generation old?) routers/servers that BEL/GTE still have in the network, at the edge. They also appear to be faster than firewall software can handle. My wife's response time at work is slower than what I am getting at home, and her office connection is almost a direct connection to the backbone--but, it is then filtered through the firewall.
Best,
JS
My results from my @Home connection from Western Canada on your site.
** Est. speed down/up: 2691/254kbps **
This is at least 53 times faster than a 56k modem
