Geoff, the 1.60$/minute is not for a portable user terminal--it's for a "high gain/big dish" terminal, whatever that may cost or weigh, I don't know. When comparing prices to G* the nearest Inmarsat equivalent would be mini-M type unit for which the air time prices at the site you linked are 2.95$/minute, and the cost of the equipment is at least twice G*s.

And yes, I know Inmarsat air time is "fully terminated." If you look at my post 12706 on this thread you will see that G* prices, including LD vary with the destination, but are almost always significantly less than Inmarsat.

I believe GEOs have their place...after all my interest in G* is mainly through Loral, whose bread and butter is GEOs...for data and broadcasting, they're great....they will be competitive in certain rural telephony applications as well. But as a cellular extension service for mobile users, G* is a substantially better, and cheaper, product.
