<<I think most of the "we need arms to protect ourselves against government" argument relies on a presumption (probably wrong) that fellow citizens would not support the dictatorial regime, following whatever chaos or disruption brings that dictator to power.>>

Well, I and the Founders think you are wrong in this case. That's why we have a Second Amendment and it has worked so far.

The fallacy of your argument is that people shouldn't be given arms for protection because they can't win. That, my friend, is the logical fallacy of begging the question, or assuming as a given the very point you are trying to prove. A case of circular reasoning.

History is replete with armed popular uprisings against government that succeeded. The American Revolution, the English Civil War under Cromwell, the Russian Revolution against the Romanovs to name a few.

Also, for your argument about the rank and file Nazi Soldaten not revolting, you would first have to establish that they ALL KNEW of the atrocities going on in the Death camps and then still ignored the situation. Very few did because of Nazi propaganda machine and that is a historical fact. In fact, there was a coup by selected Nazi insiders (who did know) though it failed. That is why Janet Reno can come in and use Gestapo tactics because she knows the media will shill for her and not take a balanced view. I wonder how the Jewish community would feel if Elian were Jewish?

So, respectfully, I'm afraid your 0-2 on this case. BTW, are you Jewish? I'm curious because I genuinely can't understand why Jews would be eager to deconstruct the 2nd Amendment. If so, perhaps you will explain it to me. I'm Catholic but lived in New York City in the 1970s and had many good Jewish friends when I was the affirmative action / token Gentile in the tax department of a Big 8 CPA firm. <g>

Just kidding, ok. Don't go PC on me.

Ciao, Daniel
