WAP may be a useful interim step while data rates and capacity are very limited, but less useful and necessary when CDMA moves to 1XRTT, HDR and CDMA 2000.

Since GSM even in the best case will have slower and less robust data capacity until the conversion to 3rd gen (and CDMA), WAP helps permit throughput of the essentials while discarding less essential material, so GPRS can be useful even though its data rates much slower and capacity more restricted than the comparable CDMA.
