Noticing the recent discussion of printers and the increased interest in digital cameras, I've got some printer news that might be helpful to people.

On March 7, Epson brought out two new printers, models #870 and #1270. The unique benefits of these two color ink-jet printers are that their ink (the same for both printers) lasts 15 years if used with a particular glossy paper made by Epson or 25 years if used with a particular matte paper also made by Epson.

This is a huge breakthrough for people who want to print pictures in their own homes. Prior to this breakthrough, the big disadvantage of using ink-jet printers for photos is that the ink wasn't nearly as stable as the ink used by photo processors. Depending on the situation, ink used by printers other than the Epson 870 or 1270 are generally expected to suffer from color shift in as little as two years.

For those not aware, a $500 ink-jet printer designed for photos is the closest technology and produces the closest results to offset printing. I prefer high-quality ink-jet prints to those produced by the photo processors which use a different technology.
