I've been following the Europe discussion with great interest. I think a component of this that hasn't been emphasized enough is Vodofone. First, they are current users of 1st generation CDMA - and according to the press release posted here are very enthusiastic about the "right now" data upgrade path it provides to 3G. Second, of course, they were a successfull bidder for spectrum in UK and it cost them a ton. They'll remain a major player in Europe at any price. Third, they were the participant in the cdma/gsm overlay trials of a couple of years back.

Hence, with rumors that Europe may allow any flavor of 3G, I think close attention should be paid to Vodofone. They can roll out 2G in the new spectrum while overlaying 2G in their existing spectrum. That would give them a huge competitive advantage over other GSM players still awaiting W-CDMA, and the various and unproven (I believe) upgrades thereto. What happens then to NOK / Ericy strategy to delay move to 3G to ensure their GSM upgrade path? In short, Europe may be the toughest nut to crack, but when it cracks, it could explode with Vodofone leading the way. This could well happen sooner rather than later.

All, of course, MHO.
