Most E-tailers Will Fail, Consulting Firm Predicts

Cambridge, Mass. (May 15, 2000)?Most dot-com retailers will be driven out of business by year-end, according to Forrester Research, based here.

But planning a funeral for e-tailing would be premature.

Another study, by Boston Consulting Group, shows 38% of Web retailers already are making money in this new industry. And a surprising 72% of catalog companies have moved their Internet operations into the black.

The cost of acquiring an online customer varies tremendously according to type of operation. Boston Consulting Group reports an $82 per customer acquisition cost for an Internet-only retailer, $38 for all online retailers, $31 for store-based retailers, and only $11 for catalog-based retailers.

More bad news for e-commerce: the Federal Trade Commission says it will fine those who didn't keep delivery promises made to consumers ordering on the Web last holiday season.
