t2, i sent an e-mail to the writer for clarification, his response>

Mike, thanks for your comment. The information came from a banker involved
in the IPO. According to this person, Unicom believes GSM is more profit
viable alternative than pumping money into a new CDMA network.

Peter Wonacott

Unicom, the
company has decided to set aside plans to develop its code division
multiple access, or CDMA, technology, in favor of upgrading its global
service for mobile communications, or GSM,

I'm surprised about the timing of this leak... I expected Unicom to keep snowing the Yankees until the congress has voted on MFN. I hope the congress now sends another delegation to Beijing to beg and whine for government intrusion into an independent business decision. There's nothing as entertaining as wathcing the laissez-faire masks drop and getting a peek at the raw interventionist instincts lurking beneath.

This post is dedicated to Peter... you now have further evidence to support your little pet theory about monstrous "Nordic sadism" directed towards innocent Americans!

The only reasonable approach to mild xenophobia is to confirm the worst suspicions.
