Temporary files ... These temporary files can be erased without causing your system harm. In fact, many believe that allowing them to breed unchecked may cause problems. The trick is, however, deleting them successfully. Windows stores the stuff in this area in a funny sort of way. Boot your system to DOS mode. Go to the place these temporary files are stored (CD \Windows\Temp\) and delete everything (ERASE C:\Windows\Temp\.) When done, be sure to check for hidden files (DIR /AH) and remove them too. Re-boot your system. When Windows re-starts, it'll make fresh (empty) copies of the files it needs. I use the following .BAT file to clean out junk on my system regularly. Note: The long file names means I cannot run this .BAT file in DOS safe mode, and the work it performs cannot be done in a DOS window. (I remove cookies too.) REM Delete unwanted files and replace their root folders DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMP MD C:\WINDOWS\TEMP DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES MD C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES DELTREE /Y "C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files" MD "C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files" ERASE C:\WIN386.SWP REM Cheers, PW.

russett, your question regarding the temp folder is, "Can I erase these without ramifications?" the best response i've been able to find to that question is You can safely remove anything in C:\Windows\Temp that was created before the current Windows session. check out the following post for more info, and for a very effective way to wipe out these files each time you boot up. #reply-13483541 as for, "they go right back to the day I first got this computer, two years ago".... i'd say it's time, russett. <g3> good luck and get back to us if you have more questions. :) mark
