<<I use the following .BAT file to clean out junk on my system regularly>>

PM
Would you go into a bit more detail as to how you implement the .BAT file.

<<(CD \Windows\Temp>>

Not sure what CD means,is that part of the file name?
Thanks
Ed

On that subject, did you ever listen to the AOL Joke?

I am not sure if it's real, pretty mean if it was, and it sure sounds real:

hi pw,

when i use the .bat file you've posted, i get uneven results.

initially it appears that all temp int files are deleted. however, they reappear again moments later upon reopening explorer.

i made note of the fact that after running your .bat file there were six cookie files remaining in the temp int file in explorer. i then opened norton's cleansweep and discovered 31 cookies waiting to be cleaned. i swept them all away.

went back to explorer and there were the same six cookies from previously. at this point i clicked edit, select all, delete and they finally disappeared.

so my 'field tests' lead me to these conclusions....

1) the .bat file misses an awful lot of cookies.
2) norton cleansweep is more thorough.
3) sometimes more than one method must be employed to achieve desired results.

the .bat file does its job admirably for removal of temp files and most temp int files, and for erasing the swap file.

thoughts?

:)

RE: "I use the following .BAT file to clean out junk on my system regularly. Note: The long file names means I cannot run this .BAT file in DOS safe mode, and the work it performs cannot be done in a DOS window. (I remove cookies too.)

REM Delete unwanted files and replace their root folders
DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
MD C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES
MD C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES
DELTREE /Y "C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files"
MD "C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files"
ERASE C:\WIN386.SWP
REM
"

OK, it's been a while since I've used batch files. Infact, I think it was before I got Windows. .... I tried the above and couldn't get it to work. Here's what I did:

1. Rebooted into DOS mode.
2. Typed in the command, "EDIT". (Is that program that came up still called the DOS editor?)
3. Typed this exact text:

REM Delete unwanted files and replace their root folders
DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
MD C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
DELTREE /Y "C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files"
MD "C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files"
REM

4. Saved the file as "PMSWITCH.BAT" in the C:\Windows directory.
5. While still in the DOS mode, went into the C:\Windows directory and typed, "PMSWITCH.BAT".
6. The batch file seemed to run.
7. While still in the DOS Mode, and the C:Windows directory, I typed "WIN" expecting to get back to Windows.
8. I got an error message saying something like "The program is still running, can't go into windows." (Actually, that's not at all what the message said, but I think that was the idea.)
9. I typed the command "EXIT" and, immediately, Windows booted up.
10. I checked the C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files directory, and it still showed as having 80+ meg, although I still couldn't see anything in it.
11. I noticed that I had created a C:\WINDOWS\Temporar directory. Hmmm.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I2
