Dan,
Around here, teachers are buying 80 to 90K, three bedroom, 1600 to 1700 sq. ft., apparently without stretching their budget. My wife is a real estate agent, and has sold several houses to "inter-city" school teachers who want get a way from those areas. They refer to commute, which is another expense that doesn't seem to bother them.
