Also, most 401K plans provide a company match, often dollar for dollar or at least 50 cents on the dollar.

StockHawk is right, of course, but a lot of companies offer much lower matches. And some of them don't use cash. Instead, they use company stock. If the company or stock is a dog, the match can be worth a lot less.

I and my wife know all about the use of company stock used to match 401k contributions. She at one time had an employer who did that. The company's stock in a relatively short time had no value. None. Zero.

My company has no match. The boss contributes about 6% of the company profits to his employee's if we are in the 401K or not. Nothing to loose on that issue.

First you really should move to Sharebuilder as Kumar suggested.

I went to the site and read up on it. I just don't feel like I have the flexibility as I would have with E*Trade. What I do now is do a cash transfer each week to E*Trade from my personal checking account. No charge from E*Trade or my bank. With Sharebuilder as I understand it, you specify an amount you want to send each week. Some weeks I might want to send more or less. But I will look at it some more.
