Compaq Unveils $999 Notebook
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), the world's largest personal computer maker, on Thursday unveiled its low-priced $999 Presario 1200 XL-450 notebook computer, available immediately.

The Presario 1200 series is powered by an Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - news) AMD K62-450 megahertz processor and is equipped with 32 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM) and a 5.9 gigabyte (GB) hard drive. It also contains preloaded software such as Microsoft Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) Microsoft Works 2000, Money 2000, Word 2000 and Encarta 2000.

Shares of Compaq Thursday afternoon were off 1/2 to 28-1/8.
