Just got back from the SSB conference and will post more later but the quick hilights-

SUN -no dual sourcing OEM- Ancor is their switch!!! The quote from SUN spokesperson "I don't see that happening."
- SUN will qualify any switch that wants to be qualified by switchmakers , resellers or integrators. Again why would you do that with a turnkey solution but SUN is working on open standards and will work fairly and quickly to qualify any switch vendor that wants to do so.Put that one to bed for good -PUHLEASE!!!!

NAS and SANs complemntary touted by everyone who talked or was asked. Them competing seemed to be the biggest non-issue of the day.

SSB speaker felt SANs numbers need to be revised upwards-
He aimed his laser pointer to the ceiling. Exponential growth for at least 2-3 years

HK Desai and Ken H- doing 1 0n 1's at SSB to explain the deal

Focus on end to end solutions and providers was big as everybody wants to be the next Cisco. LOL Even Ken made his case for Q-Ancor as the Cisco- He didn't volunteer it -it was an answer to an SSB question to a panel about who will be the Cisco of the space- % panelist -5 potential Cisco's.<G>

While last SSB conference in December focused on components and growth cycle of the component companies this conference was all software and how to put a SANs into a box. The winner of the space will be those that can manage the software across the Network ala Cisco. Servers biz in the new SAN world will be small in comparison to storage and storage is the place to be. Again - gettin the SAN in a box was a big theme(always has been SUNs theme).
I can only emphasize very very strongly that software for SANs and specifically software for switches will really
help decide who the Gorilla will be.

HK Desai will let vendors decide on switch where they prefer one over the other and usually he is not asked about switches -This may change- Will continue to work with Brocade but will market Ancor switches when no preference is sighted- Ancor will fight many of it's own battles with Brocade with guidance from HK- seemed to be what he was saying.

Heard that the worry that Brocade would not meet FCSW standards if they did open up their switch routing codes.
That was a worry as all the vendors except Brocade want standards- Brocade believes they are the standard so why change and why share.

Interop- will continue to be an issue but clients tired of it and for once the blame seemed to be on Brocade from the few I talked to -The SSB guy felt if Brocade played ball the issue could disappear in 6 months and still slowing down the industries gargantuan growth. If not, interop will still be an issue in 1 year but lots of strides have been made as they are figuring out Brocades codes which somebody told me was taken from an older architecture?

More later- Got to go work- Ed
