Had a chance to meet HK Desai in the hallway- Didn't realize who he was. Heard some guy talking to him about Qlogic while badmouthing Ancor at the same time.
I started talking to him and chimed in that i thought it was a great deal for Qlogic and then asked them if he worked for Q and the other guy said "This is Mr. Qlogic."
to which I said -"Your the CEO?" and congratulated him on the deal. The other guy who seemed to be a journalist(just a guess) commented that those other guys (Ancor) was suspect to him while praising QLOGIC as well as Brocade as HK explained to him that this was a great deal for both sides and emphasized the synergies- Qlogic marketing, ability to build FC infrastructure and client base versus Ancor's technical excellence and near ramp.
HK also hopes to maintain a good working relationship with Brocade as more often then not the switch is picked by the customer and not Qlogic but that opportunities would arise for Q-Ancor as customers now looking more for end to end solutions. He also didn't think that Brocade could not work with Q as Q has a big customer base and solid reputation and gets picked as the HBA and indrastructure provider well before brocade comes on the scene. Once the rhetoric dies down this will become apparent
I don't think anything is going to break this deal IMO.
HK backing it all the way and I'm sure he's had alot of FUD coming his way.

My guess is that Cal stays on as GM of Ancor and Ken leaves.

SUN reiterates single source OEM and that OEM is Ancor.
SUN has been pushing the SANs in a box from the beginning -
Seems like the chicken will come home to roost in a positive way for SUN as this theme was pounded home by alot of Speakers as well as SSB reps. SUN turnkey solution the equivilent of a SAN in a box.
Scott McNealy was quoted more then once with his comments about the network being the focus replacing the importance of the PC as the BOX.
Servers were also diminished in alot of talks and in panel discussions including EMC's where storage networks become king.
Nobody would go as far as saying storage would replace the LANs or slug it out with them for dominance of networking. I think SUN comes the closest to thinking that might happen- The feeling was that this battle won't take shape for another 5-6 years as all topologies will have their place and co-exist.
10Gig Ethernet was pooh poohed by storage vendors as more smoke then fire and again years away from working out problems to make storage viable on GE which took FC that long to work out.
Sun would not expand on their June 14 storage announcement with any specifics or on any scope and wouldn't give storage estimates.

Everyone seemed to think that the NAS and SANs were very complementary- I think the confusion comes in that the NAS can be attached to the LAN for some applications - So the competition isn't really between NAS and SANs but between GE and FC- GE positioning themselves as alternative to the SANs and the fact that NAS can work off of GE is just another GE argument is using to compete with FC. NAS comes up a winner either way.

Interop seemed to be the second biggest FC hurdle this time around. It's getting closer according to one panel that included Inrange- gadzooks-crossroads- storage tech and Ancor though the Storage Tech guy was the only one quiet on the interop question.
They all made nice nice with Brocade on the panel and acknowledged them as the leader of the SANs but private discussions it was all Brocade holding up the works. They promise then they don't deliver then they promise again -No answer here except that one person i heard say that they have almost figured out the Brocade routing codes which another person said was based on an old architecture(?) (lost on that one) and that the worry was that wouldn't meet FCSW2 standards which have been adopted BY Virtually everyone else SUN and EMC.The ramifications -We will see.
Even the SSB guy seemed to put the responsibility on Brocade but that customers - I took it to mean EMC wants this resolved and wants it resolved sooner then later - The end users don't want to here about this nonsense and it becomes a question in there mind.
Brocade playing a very high stakes game to control the SANS market -could blow up in their face bigtime.
Still all vendors seeing huge growth in SAN requests and implementations and the hope was interop is put to bed in less then 6 months as an issue. Everyone wants their SANs -they just want the BS to stop. SANs seem to moving at exponetial rate despite this conflict as storage becoming unmanageable outside the SANs.

The major issue this time around for SANs was Software -software management and software integration into heterogenuos environment and Running IP SANs much of which has been brought up by Kumar of Piper-
Qlogic seems to feel this is where they can really add to Ancor's value as they have alot of experience from going to testing to real working SANs- If Qlogic/Ancor can develop this software bridge from infrastructure to switch to large fabric SANs we can probably take on Brocade bigtime. From what I understand it was this end to end solution with the ability to develop the proper software that had Greg Reyes go ballistic to the point that he declared Qlogic a competitor and may not want to be in the position to reccomend Qlogic and compared it to a wife that wanted to go out and date.
SOFTWARE and it's IMPORTANCE is on CENTER STAGE at this CONFERENCE and in this PHASE of STORAGE NETWORK development and it is crucial to the SUCCESS and LONGEVITY and FUTURE RAMP of the SANS- So you tech PEOPLE-TELL US WHERE WE ARE HEADED?
HK said they usually get to the customer first so he's not worried and recently HK and Reyes have toned down the rhetoric to the point that Reyes called the merger good for the industry and HK says they will let the customer choose the switch. I don't think either one believes in the tooth fairy though.
Still alot of bad feelings between Ancor and Brocade.

I'm sure there is more but can't remember right now.
