Why are Democrat and Republican leaders united on the issue of China trade? Clinton, Delay, and the Bushes are for China's entry into WTO and permanent preferred trade status for China. I can't think of much else they agree on.

A Chinese dissident, Wei Shengyang (sp?), who spent 19 years in prison in China and is now in exile here in the U.S. argued pretty persuasively (to me) against permanent free trade status for China on the Wall Street Journal editorial page yesterday. He pointed out that as long as China's trade status is reviewed periodically in Congress, we have some leverage on them.

It bothers me that our normally disunited leaders are united on this and that they think it's important - W said a day or two ago an upcoming China trade bill was the most important thing the U.S. will do this year. Huh? Isn't there going to be a little election later this year.
