A number of years ago, I watched a Congressional hearing on the protection of the steel industry, on C-SPAN. I was kind of horrible: the steel guys, union and management, came in with their sob story about Japanese steel. Then a fellow came from John Deere, who said that if they were forced to buy American, the price of a tractor would double. He pointed out that his people averaged $22000/year, not bad at the time, and that steel workers averaged $45000/year, which was very high in the mid- 80s. Then a bunch of other industries that used imported steel came in, with the same observation: their guys would suffer essentially to shield steel workers from competition. Meanwhile, a dozen of more other American industries would be devastated.........
