Jim: I'd guess that you're right about carrying equity holdings at cost.

My memory (which is questionable) is that I've heard various companies refer to earnings related to investment portfolios.

In some cases, I think they've profited from sales of positions acquired in other companies.

In some cases, (as we all know) companies have benefited from spin offs.

Those days appear to be over for now.

Mr. Strauss: GAP requires that corporations value their investment portfolios at either cost or market value, whichever is lower, as a conservative measure of value. Often, however, if there is a substantial gain in the portfolio, the method used will be indicated on the balance sheet with the market value shown parenthetically.
