Sure, there is American diplomacy, and there are American bombs. But until we have an energy policy in this country that explicitly states as its goal that we must be energy independent of external resources by some achievable timeframe (2015?) we will forever be victims instead of actors.

Personally, I would have supported a heavy tax on gas from 1975 on and then use that surplus to subsidize taxpayers who invested in electric cars and other forms of transportation that are less oil dependent. If the government had taken the leadership role and had brought up the unit volumes then economies of scale would have eventually kicked in and pushed the prices of those products down.

Well, probably this isn't the right forum for this discussion.
