I've never had any doubt that Intel had a backup plan. I'm just not sure that we've seen real leaks that it is viable.

The context is the i820 and i840 (i.e. ECC) SDRAM disasters. Intel has had nothing but problems with those boards. I think that this will make Intel very hesitant to use a similar part to rescue Willamette from the gelid embrace of Rambus.

More likely they will cut off i820 production so as to open up RDRAM for Willamette. What would you do? The Register said that the i820 step-3 got cancelled a few weeks ago. That would support the suggestion that Intel is going to shift RDRAM usage over to Willamette. And they only need a few million parts for this year.
