Actually, I like the thought of the story ending where it ended. A sheet of flame pouring across the roof, silently, and the owner of the house standing on his front porch in his stocking feet, hands in his pocket, puffing on his pipe, apparently unaware. What an image! Fraught with symbolism, fraught, I tell you. Let it be. You just don't get enough fraught images in life, you gotta take them when you can. Like a photo by Weejee or Dianne Arbus, or something that gets the Pulitzer. Real life is invariably anticlimactic. I think I invariably zig when others zag. Everyone has a purpose in life.;^)
