Actually, I like the thought of the story ending where it ended. A sheet of flame pouring across the roof, silently, and the owner of the house standing on his front porch in his stocking feet, hands in his pocket, puffing on his pipe, apparently unaware. What an image! Fraught with symbolism, fraught, I tell you. Let it be. Well, yes, I have to agree... I like "enigmatic" a lot... Very PoMo... The reader (viewer) becoming involved in the creation of meaning.... Hee hee.... I expect to be burnt at the stake or at least mildly singed for that remark... (-:

"What an image! Fraught with symbolism, fraught, I tell you."

Is it fraught with symbolism?

I never thought of it that way.

Because you have to think of that before you start.

I think.

No?

Maybe not.

Maybe it comes out that way?

You could think of it, about it, afterwards? Think about the symbolism of something you just wrote?

I don't know. Jeez.
