Re: Will power has nothing to with it. I have no physiological need for alcohol, whereas some people do.

Scumbria,

You struck a nerve here. I'm from Irish and Polish decent and come from a long line of alcohalics.

Will power has everything to do with it. The problem is many people are looking for an excuse. We come up with excuses such as alcoholism, but it's all BS to me. I went on 6 month benders in college, only to not have an entire drop for the next 3 months. I just killed myself the last 3 days in Vegas and probobly won't drink for a long time, a very long time the way I feel right now.

By any definition, I'm overwieght by 20-40 pounds right now, but you won't see me making excuses. I deserve it, I've become lazy and just plain haven't given a shit over the past year. Recently, I have decided to care and am getting things in order. Hopefully, by the time we all meet, I will be in shape and at an ideal weight. If not, it's my own fault for being lazy and having no self control.

You are still very young, and have a lot to learn about what makes us human.

True, so very true.

The best thing I've learned in my life up to date is not to believe in excuses, whatever they may be. It scares me to believe I don't have control of my own life. If I think I can control my life and others cannot, wouldn't that suggest I'm better than everyone else? I don't believe this one bit, everyone makes there own decisions, good or bad. Most deserve what they get from their decisions.

Re: "Exactly. Addiction is a serious physiological and psychological problem. For example, why do some people become alcoholics, and not others? I can drink like a fish one week, and not touch a drink for the next 12 months. Why is it that some other people can't do that? Will power has nothing to with it. I have no physiological need for alcohol, whereas some people do. You are still very young, and have a lot to learn about what makes us human."

I wouldn't normally get into one of these discussions but I think you have bought hook line and sinker the spin created by the professional community that makes a very good living treating peoples "genetic predisposition" to addictions of every imaginable kind. The basic idea is to tell people they have no personal responsibility for their behavior and therefore they need to pay the professional huge sums of money for "treatment". A very good living is made by the medical professionals, the insurance companies pay the bill and charge the employers (or government) huge sums of money and people go on scarffing down the cheeseburgers, smoking their cigarettes, drinking their alcohol, doing their dope or whatever other compulsive behavior is in vogue this week and rest assured, it's not their fault.... they're genetically predisposed.....

The Doctors and therapists drive Mercedes, the insurance companies make billions, the people know it's not their fault and a good time is had by all...
