Roberto Calvi?? Hmmm.... I read David Yallop's book on the assassination of Pope John Paul I about 15 years ago. Yet, all in all, I'd claim that Calvi was just another "victim" of the Cold-War policy in Western Europe. For the more you learn about that time span (roughly 1945 through 1990), the more you get lost about who was manipulating who in Italy or, on a broader scale, in Europe. I think we can admit that R. Calvi was entangled in a spiderweb together with the following key players: > the Vatican; > the CIA/conservative right-wing (note that I don't refer to the US as a whole since US intelligence is usually "hijacked" by the most conservative/reactionary fringe of the American elite); >the Mafia (both Sicilian and US); >the conservative/far-rightist fringe of the (West-)European bourgeoisie, that is the CIA-manipulated Gladio, various intelligence services (Italy's SISMI, France's DGSE, MI5,...), as well as various fellowships gathering businessmen (Club de l'Horloge, P2 Lodge, Chivalric clubs,...) or clerico-fascists (Opus Dei, Ordre de Malte,...); >Finally, the "mainstream" establishment who want to keep Europe's political fabric as stable as possible and whose vested interests (in corporations, banks, media conglomerates,....) call for the elimination of every "whistleblower". All those lobbies have had --and still have-- their own "pet agenda" but, overall, they share a strategic commonwealth in keeping Western Europe on the "right track", that is in preventing the leftists from gaining enough political appeal among Europe's fragmented electorate. Hence Europe's routine revival of the far-right: you'll never see some far-leftist loony popping up in Great Britain or in the Netherlands, or even in Italy! The far-leftist loonies get neutralized on short notice --together with their moderate allies (see Aldo Moro). Conversely, little Hitlers like Haider, Milosevic, Le Pen, or Karel Dillen (Flemish Vlaams Blok) had no problem at all in obtaining the necessary support from the aforementioned lobbies: their closet allies inside industry, finance, media outlets, the military, etc. have quietly provided them with slush funds, intelligence on their political opponents, and positive press-coverage.... Now, tell me about our BRAVE FREE WORLD --or is it the freedom to choose between a BIGMAC and a FISH-BURGER??
