Frank, I had thought the "toggling capability" rests in the handsets, not in the base stations? Are you suggesting that the SP's will overlay analog/cdma/tdma/gsm on their networks? [I'm not a wireless wonk!] Best, JS

...but I just wanted to say that increasingly the pcs/cellular providers will be resorting to (and vendors are manufacturing the features in their wares which support) on-the-fly toggling capabilities. Toggling will be in place that supports cdma/gsm/analog, or tdma/gsm'analog, tdma/cdma/gsm/analog, and so forth, just as they accommodate toggling between analog and either of the digital formats, today.... Actually Frank I have to disagree with you here. Multi-band multi mode will increasingly be available, but it will stay within genres (TDMA, CDMA). The carriers are pretty much locked into their technology choice so there is no impetus from them for a multi-multi function handset - it just costs more, provides them with no immediate benefit and facilitates churn. Also, from the manufacturer side, why do they want to build one device when they can build many? They sell a lot more phones due to the fact that customers switch from one technologically incompatible network to another. Four posts of just my two cents.... ww p.s.
