I know that the story is given a happy ending, IF one can muster the belief that this worldly existence is just the cartoon before the movie.

But I am lastingly unhappy with the sense that the end justifies the means.

It is a popular tale, a heroic tale, a tale of rescue and derring- do. You are, though, not quite getting the thrust. The Dragon is Death, and the Brave Prince vanquished it!

I won't get involved in the religious debate- but your description was just so similar to the mythological Heroic Quest that if anything, it seemed to give weight to the grouping of Christianity with all the other mythologies.
