I don't know about that German system, never heard of it. You will have to ask somebody else.

Bert,

The German school system is better than the US system. They decide early on a child's aptitude and steer that child in that direction....if celebral, to a college program; if mechanical, to appropriate programs; if more manually inclined, to programs of that nature. If the child changes her or his mind, they can transition into another program.

I think when Bill speaks of apprenticeship programs....when it is clear that a kid isn't going to college, then he/she is put into an apprenticeship program to hone the skills learned in school.

The only negative to the German system is that college oriented kids end up not getting out of school until their late 20's and continue to be dependent on their parents well past the age of American kids. So that my German friends who are now 30 and 31 complain on and on about having to work and how much they want to go on holiday. It gets old very quickly....and only it that way do I think Germans are more immature than Americans.

Bert, The USA system is quantity based and the European ones are quality based. The average European university graduate is better than the average US grad, however the US schools have a wider range and so the top US grads are better than Euro grads and the bottom ones are worse.
The US schools have enormous ranges while the UK and Euro schools tend to be required to meet certain standards to grant degrees. In the USA any one can grant a degree and the market and reputaion of the school will determine how good their grads will do in the job market. There are 'diploma mills' in the USA, Pay $$ and get whatever degree you like. They have a low reputation, but they seem to make money every year.
As to %, I am vague, just rmors , so until I have more solid facts, I will cease judgements.
