Lather, The writer of that article stated this... << Electric vehicles require battery pack replacement approximately every 500 cycles, which typically averages 20,000-30,000 miles at a price of $2,000-$3,000 for a conventional performance electric vehicle, resulting in an average cost of 7-15½ per mile of vehicle operation. >> The EV1 now uses a Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack that lasts the life of the auto, gives a range of over 120 miles, and then would be recyclable. Keep in mind that you "fill up" every time you come home. How many times are you going to drive 120 miles in a day this month? Admittedly the NiMH battery cost is high right now, but that would come down drastically with mass production. GM builds 500 EV1s at a time, and has done it's best to discourage the consumer from buying one. Have you seen one in a showroom yet? Even the Edsel had wide exposure. I recently asked Don Devlin at the Energy Conversion Devices thread to give an update on how he liked his EV1 now that he has had one for over 4 years.... "Del, I wish that everyone on this list could experience the EV1 with NIMH batteries. I am now several months into my my fourth year with the EV1 and several months with the newer EV1 with NIMH. My wife and I also have a new Lexus a few months old that is used sometimes by my wife in her work. We can barely lock or unlock the windows and doors of the Lexus not because they are so complicated but because we never want to drive anything other than the NIMH EV1, and haven't gotten around to really learning the ins and outs of the ICE... As most of you know I first thought that the advertising and marketing for the EVS were a complete failure but have since come to realize that from the point of view of the Auto makers they have been totally successful. They have convinced the Press, the auto press, and the public that they have tried to sell the EVs and have been rejected by the public. MASTERFULL!... My son who has a brand new Mercedes convertible will hardly step into it. He loves his EV1 with NIMH as much as I love mine." Message 13709209 Del
