Instantaneous communication has a lot to do with it; there has never been a disruptive technology like the Internet before. As far as investing goes...Because of the huge promise the Internet offers, the sector has attracted investment willing to look past the startup costs of businesses investors believed had long term potential to leverage the opportunity. The best discription I have heard for this sector is "public venture capital". Now we're in a period of decreased liquidity and the "what have you done for me lately" money is in control. The opportunity hasn't changed, and the leaders still have the lead. The only difference is the current market for the securities. That will change again as it has before.
