For me, I was dubious that Gemstar fit my interest in wireless and fiberoptics. Mike and NYStew and others argued persuasively that the two way TV was just around the corner and that Gemstar was in the catbird seat (baseball stuff) when that took place.

I don't think Interactive TV is a prerequisite for Gemstar's success. Digital broadcasting (as opposed to HDTV) is. All the satellite broadcasts are digital now including DirectTV and Dish Network. Many if not most cable companies are converting to a digital broadcast. My cable provider, Cox Communications, will have digital cable in my area this winter.

I'm pretty sure Gemstar's EPG can work in analog boxes also but there aren't many of them being shipped these days. The conversion to digital is the catalyst that will sell set top boxes and make money for Gemstar.

I'm really looking forward the the earnings announcement because I have a feeling the EPG tornado has begun. DirectTV and Dish have been raking in new customers and Gemstar is making money on every one of the set top boxes. Comments?
