Chic, I have a great deal of respect for IBM and your fab process capabilities. I think though that it might be a mistake to assume that you guys are the only ones who can do SOI.

chic, IBM underwent a big change in their philosophy towards their competition and the rest of the world about 15 years ago. That was with regard to whether they'd sell any of their top notch technology on the open market. They used to sell nothing, now they'll sell about anything to anybody. An example was about 8 years ago when they started selling their mainframe chipset (CPUs, I/O, the whole thing) to Hitachi, who was their #1 competitor in their #1 selling product. If the price were right, they'd probably make chips for Sun.

I believe IBM feels they are 18 months ahead primarily because of the maturity of the SOI device model. For a non fully depleted SOI design, you must have an SOI device model which accurately predicts floating body effects. This is certainly non trivial and requires considerable effort. I believe IBM has done a remarkably good job on the SOI device model. From a pure processing point of view, most of the players have SOI processes. (IBM/Motorola (I've heard of SOI Athlons)/Intel/Samsung/etc.)
