You have just brilliantly pointed out the fallacy of those who believe markets are perfectly rational.

Lots of takeover speculation all over cyberspace. My personal take on this is that Lehmann, MSDW and ML, whether acting independently or not, are out to gut the Q for reasons I cannot yet comprehend. Please see:

QUALCOMM WAS CRASHED BY LEHMAN'S MEMO TO CLIENTS.
Tim Luke's said that China may not use CDMA technology, in a note to private clients on Monday. In last 3 days, there were several large block trades, exceeding 2-3 miliion shares each. Such massive dumping brought down Qualcomm for last 3 days.
Large institutional investors can bring down any company with massive and insane dumping. They did it to Texas Instrument in 1998, bringing it down to 39. It split twice after that and is at 68 3/4.

Qualcomm is a great company with great technology. Merits do win eventually.

For Merrill Lynch's role in this, please look at this:

So, there are at least two major players who are suggesting (incorrectly, in my opinion) that the Q will not do well in China. Ruffian also advises that The Grapevine indicates that MSDW is taking the same position as ML. Ruffian is reliable.

Why is this taking place? Your guess is as good as mine. They are creating wonderful buying opportunities, however.
