Hi, Bernard - This is good stuff. We entered into a debate on the mobile Last Mile a few weeks ago. Recognizing the futility of trying to extrapolate from the present to the future, we proposed, instead, idealized domains (networks) where competing network "visions" were aggregated on fiber. Mobile solutions were designed into, and optimized for, these networks. One of the precepts was that eventually, all mobile transmissions would be data, ie., VoIP. (Based on Moore's Law, improvements in ASICs, SOCs, and the perception of a tremendous revenue 'sweet spot' that would try to cram as much functionality as possible into the cell phone.) If you can accept, for the moment, the concept (agreed, that you may disagree) - of that ideal network - is CDMA still the best transport mechanism? The spectral efficiency of CDMA is excellent; but when all traffic is data, and available spectrum is near saturation, what are the choices? This reverts to Mike's (and the ITU's) emphasis on the importance of cost in a migration path from existing infrastructure - but migration to what? Just another loaded question for you, Bernard!
