At the risk of going into trodden territory, I think it is also important to distinguish between the flashes of unbidden emotion and that which is cultivated. To use an example other than hate, even the strictest of Christians should not hold a person accountable for a sudden moment of lust but might object strongly to the same person's reading pornography for hours to induce the sensation of lust.

I find nothing discreditable about acknowledging the flash of hatred, particularly when the energy is not turned on a victim but is used to accomplish something as sensible as cleaning the house or mowing the lawn or beating the rugs or whatever. This is very different from a nurtured hatred.
