RE: Minute Pricing
imo, G* is still trying to find an optimal price point to maximize their profit. the company seems adequately funded until the end of this year. so they may have some time to find a sound business model. my big hope is one of the auto makers push this technology into new models. i think the day will come. communication is becoming ubiquitous and people are getting used to stay in touch. and it's not practical to set up base stations to cover everywhere. also G* service is complementary to cell phone not a competition.

there is a big difference between irid and g. irid system was not reliable. half of the satellites were not functional when it was up for sale in march.

Even if Vodafone or any other licensee loses exclusivity, for Globalstar to be able to direct sell, Globalstar will need to invest in gateways, in billing systems, license fees, customer care in the country etc etc. The cost of this will be as high as it is for the licensee that lost exclusivity. So the business model cannot work....unless the market is big enough to support twice the number of gateways as actually exist.....In which case the licensee would not have lost exclusivity in the first place.
The key to a 'loss of exclusivity' being effective is if Globalstar can get back the gateway free or at a heavily discounted price from the original licensee.
Finally, remember that building a gateway and surrounding infrastructure will take a year to 18 months.
