Thailand says Siemens, Intel keen on wafer plant

BANGKOK, May 29 (Reuters) - A Thai government-sponsored $1 billion wafer fabrication project has attracted investment
from top global chip makers, a minister said on Monday.

Suitors included Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), Siemens AG , and Taiwan's Macronix International Corp , said Thai
Science Minister Arthit Ourairat.

Early this year the cabinet agreed with a plan by the industry ministry to set up a wafer fabrication with a monthly production of
between 25,000 and 30,000 wafers. The plant was scheduled to start production in 2002.

The government set a maximum investment limit of 26 percent in the project.

Arthit did not say when the government would finalise the investor candidates.
