>>In fact, we do not know for sure that Reno even bothered with getting a warrant in the first place, since it was not served, as required by law and as mandated in the warrant itself, when the federal agents barged into the Gonzalez home, and was not produced for Elian's attorneys and the press until two days after the raid. In press statements immediately after the assault, Assistant Attorney General Eric Holder and other Clinton spokesmen stated that they hadn?t needed a warrant for the raid, that they were operating under the authority of INS powers. <<

What if they had gotten a Court order, and went in on notice to enforce it? Would they have met armed resistance from the crowd? Someone in the crowd? People in Florida have guns coming out the kazoo. Even 13 year olds have the means handy to shoot their teachers there.

I think what was done was necessary to avoid many injuries and the loss of innocent lives. Dershowitz was never in Vietnam, never a police officer, couldn't be paid enough to risk his life for anyone. He pontificates from a comfy armchair. Let him go in with a Court order to get Elian.

It's so easy to risk other people's lives when we don't have to face the widows and children, isn't it?

Re Reno's raid:

I happened upon this in an article on the current market condition at thestreet.com . Couldn't help but think of you.

If Greenspan could be expected to follow the Powell Doctrine -- strike with overwhelming force then make a quick exit -- the current market miasma might indeed soon be ready to lift.

I'll bet you admire Colin Powell. I know I do. If his approach is applicable to the Army and the Fed, perhaps it's not altogether unreasonable for the INS to use it, as well.

Once again, I'm not trying to advocate for the INS, only to point out that their explanation for the use of force among the plausible explanations and shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

I've developed a bit of a habit when it comes to reading articles cited on SI. I go first to the home page, and review that. If I see clear evidence of ideological bias there, in any direction, I don't bother reading any of the content. Why should I? I already know what's going to be there, and that any facts or ideas which do not support the predetermined conclusion are going to be ignored.

I would no more waste my time reading The New American that I would waste it reading The Nation.

I've also developed the habit of getting my US news from non-US sources. The perspective is generally much more realistic and much less emotion-driven.

LIES LIES LIES
Lazaro said over and over again he would never ever give Elian up. Janet Reno was forced to take action and they were warned.
The family and Sanchez were waiting for a call from Corollo, that is why Corollo was so angry. Sanchez had thousands practicing to have a human guard in front of the home and if they had known the marshalls were about to come there would have been blood in the streets just like penelas said.

According to Lazaro's terrified daughter, Marisleysis, one of the agents pointed a gun at her chest and shouted, "Give me the f***ing boy or I'll shoot. The boy he was after, of course, was her six-year-old cousin, Elian Gonzalez. Elian's mother, Elizabeth Brotons, died at sea in a desperate attempt to flee from Communist Cuba to the United States. Since Elian's miraculous rescue on Thanksgiving Day last year, on that same fateful voyage that took his mother, Marisleysis had become his surrogate mother. "I beg you, please don't let the boy see the guns," Marisleysis pleaded. "Please, I'll give him to you."
