Registry backup -- Windows 98 ... In Windows 98, under System Tools / Information, clicking Tools / Registry checker gives one the opportunity to create a new (fresh) registry backup. (It asks after checking the registry) This part is clear enough, but what do we do when we need to restore from backups made this way? These backups are stored in a few files in a hidden directory \Windows\SYSBCKUP. The (5) backups are in files RB000.CAB through RB005.CAB and since these are cabinet files, the data must be extracted first. Check the dates the files were made so you get the freshest. Extracting from cabinet files can be easy or difficult. Clicking on a .CAB file with Explorer takes you through the process easily. If Windows won't boot, you'll need to use the DOS EXTRACT command. This does the same work, but you'll need to do each step manually (Extract, Set Attributes, Copy/Move, Re-Set Attributes, Garbage clean-up) So, we can see that Windows 98 makes the backup easier but the restore a bit more challenging. hi pw, thanks for the input. re... "Putting your commands into a .BAT file could save you some re-typing" ... the only .bat file i've ever created was the one you shared with us recently, i think you called it cleanup.bat. i have it on my desktop and run it fairly regularly. i wonder, could you show me how to put those registry restore commands into a .bat file? btw, with cleanup1.bat, when i run it, delete appears to work fine, but the dos window says that only temp is created and not cookies or temp int files. is that normal? these files just regenerate on their own, correct? also, after the erase c:win386.swp command, i see an 'access denied' line in the dos window. does that mean that the swap file was not erased? :) mark
