the scanreg tool looks like the easiest way to both backup AND restore the win98 registry....

"Windows 98

In addition to the above mentioned ways to backup your registry, you
can also use the build-in Scanreg tool to make a backup of your
Windows 98 registry:

Making a Backup of the Registry using Scanreg:

If you're running in Windows, select Start > Run and in the Open
box type scanreg /backup

Please note that you won't notice anything, but the backup is
made. You can check the (default) \Windows\Sysbackup
folder to check.

If you're running in MS-DOS mode type: scanreg /backup, at
the prompt, this will backup your registry

Scanreg can be customized to include other files to backup. For more
information see this document: Customizing ScanReg
( windows-help.net )

If you want to restore a backup you made with Scanreg, you have to
(re)start your computer in MS-DOS mode (hold down the [Ctrl] key
while restarting the computer, until you see the Microsoft Windows
98 Startup Menu, and choose the option Command prompt only)
and type scanreg /restore. You will see the 5 last backups of your
registry listed with the date/time."

in the article referenced in my #reply-13793135 post

( infinisource.com )

i'd like to call your attention to a specific line in the following set of partial instructions...

"To Backup your Windows 95/98 Registry manually:

1.Open Windows Explorer
For Windows 95, in the View Menu, choose Options and
be sure that the box Show all file types is checked
For Windows 98, in the View Menu, choose Folder
Options and click on the View tab, and see that Show all
files is checked under Hidden Files
2.Be sure the box Hide MS-DOS file extensions... is UNchecked in
both Windows 95/98 and hit OK
"

the question being, in my win98se explorer, i closest i come to Hide MS-DOS file extensions is the selection Hide file extensions for known file types. do you think these are the same?

btw, the above pertains to a manual method of reg backup/restore that, as my previous post indicates, may be less efficient than the scanreg tool. i'm curious more than anything else as to why my explorer differs from the linked instructions.
