Gene, <Are there reasons the DDR chip set "Colusa" couldn't be modified to work with Willamette?>

First of all, Colusa isn't DDR. It's RDRAM. It will be the only Foster chipset that supports RDRAM, and only in workstation configurations.

Second, Colusa has two RDRAM channels on it. To match the sustainable bandwidth of these two RDRAM channels, Colusa will need dual 266 MHz DDR channels. That's awfully hard to implement on a (relatively) high-volume motherboard.

Third, besides the upcoming Intel 870 chipset, the only chipsets that will support Foster and DDR will be coming from ServerWorks (formerly known as RCC).

<is Foster to Willamette what Xeon is to PIII? Basically the same core with larger on chip cache?>

There's more to Foster than just a Willamette with more cache. Let's just leave it at that for now.
