Hokay, here's a theory we haven't heard before. Maybe Anthony just got a little too creative but did actually do the right thing with no intention of misleading anyone or doing something with the money that wasn't intended by the donor.

Maybe he did give the money directly to the refugees and found he couldn't get a proper receipt afterwards. Maybe he gave out the receipts which he did thinking that the organization would have no problem with it since after all it is a charity and if the money went to the intended cause who cares how it got there as long as it got there.

Sometimes charitable organizations can be a pain in the ass when it comes to moving the money quickly to the people it was intended for.

I actually had something like this happen when I personally made a large donation to a family that was in desperate need of money ... like if they didn't get money that day they wouldn't have a roof over their heads. They were in a distant country after having been thrown out of a third world country where they were serving as missionaries. They were kicked out when it was discovered their purpose was to spread the gospel which is illegal in this particular country. They knew all along it was illegal but they felt compelled to go undercover to do God's work and spread the gospel in a country that saw mostly darkness. They used their life savings to do this work along with what they were given by the charity that sponsored them.

When they were found out they maxed out their credit cards and got on a plane to England as it was the closest friendly English speaking country to where they were. The police drove them to the airport and said get on the next plane out or go to jail. They had no money and no place to live when they arrived in England ... no contacts either. They had a 3 year old son with them and the wife had just had a miscarriage caused by all this stress.

I wired the money directly into their account so they could use their bank card to access the funds within about an hour of my making the arrangements. I was never able to get a tax receipt from the organization that they were with because they said I didn't use the proper channels. If I had used the proper channels it would have taken 6 weeks for the missionaries to receive the money and they would have starved to death by then. I know it takes 6 weeks for the organization to process the funds because I had sent donations to this family through the charity before. The missionary organization sent them $0 while they were in desperate need and being kicked around from country to country. Some charities really suck at doing what they were set up to do.

Just a thought ... Anthony did go through great discomfort to help the refugees and I think we should not assume he intended to con everybody for $14K or whatever it was supposed to be.
