their K2 box is an order of magnitude greater than Cerent's optical switch, which is an order or magnitude greater than legacy SONET gear.

interesting but no cause for alarm on Nortel's part. As for Lucent, they seem to have a lot to be concerned about. Remember, Ciena said it was Nortel, not anybody else, who they kept encountering as their main competition. I believe, without being able to prove, that Nortel has a proprietary advantage in their components. In fact, they have said so. They also have a manufacturing advantage. I am not saying they cannot be squeezed by other companies but I think it will be difficult.
