Kenneth, If I were Mr Roth, I'd be biting my nails down to the nubs right about now. Taking out the new kid on the block (Cyras) would surely raise the hackles of the Feds. As for taking out Cisco...well, good luck Mr Roth.

Now, let's stick with the facts. Ciena does not manufacture or market legacy SONET gear. Currently, Ciena's primary product line is DWDM, a SONET displacing technology. The former technology is 1980 vintage, the latter, mid 1990's.

It is true that Nortel competes with Ciena in this arena, and Nortel claims the North American lion's share of the market. But they sure as Hell didn't get there on their technical merits. Funny money financing, the good old boy network, and massive size helped a lot.

I also own a few shares of Lucent, and I read their literature. As I recall, Lucent also claims to be the worlds leader in Optical Networking technology in their Annual Report. FWIW <ggg>

PS: Kenneth, Do you know the basis of the Nortel suit against ONI?
