Great one pheilman, even Globalstar has Anritsu for testing. So far we haven't heard of anybody producing test gear for WCDMA yet.

Wonder how DaCoMo gonna test their phone(do they have one right now?) Or they don't need a system testing? <ggg>

I think this is a useful angle to watch the CDMA2000 vs. WCDMA battles. If there is no test gear, there will be no deployment. And test gear takes some time to get to the field. CDMA2000 gear is available, now, off the shelf. WCDMA gear???

Thanks for this. Wonder who else makes test gear for these systems? We should find out and see if they are doing anything with W-CMA.

I previously wrote about another barometer for W-CDMA roll-out. Recently, the head of Lucent's wireless division said that in order for Europe to roll W-CDMA out by early 2002, Lucent and others would need to start shipping infrastructure by the 2nd half of 2001.

Using this timeline as a guide, wouldn't infrastructure need to be shipping by this Fall for Docomo to begin W-CDMA in May 2001? (Unless by roll-out, Docomo means the start of infra installation. This would put them on a similar timeframe as Europe.)

So we should watch carefully this Fall to see if there are reports of W-CDMA infra shipments and installations in Japan. If not, then it should be a safe bet there will be no W-CDMA roll-out in Japan by May 2001!

Inspired by your test equipment note (which I agree is critical), I checked out the Tektronix CMU 200 system. They mention CDMA 2000 before W-CDMA in the below quote which must be foreshadowing a first to market victory for CDMA 2000! (OK that's a stretch but anyone in the industry knows it to be true.)

" The CMU 200 is designed to support the existing wireless standards (GSM, IS-136 TDMA, AMPS and CDMA) as well as to provide growth into emerging 3rd generation standards such as CDMA 2000, W-CDMA and Bluetooth. The customer can purchase signaling capability by standard and by band to keep capital expenditures to an absolute minimum. As additional capability is required at a later date, further standards may be added through a combination of hardware/software upgrades "
